How We Started
Since 1993 it has been serving the Church Families and the young people of Australia. The Monastic life at our blessed Monastery began in 1995 by two blessed and honoured Monks from Egypt; Very Rev Fr Pavlos Anba Bishoy and Rev Fr Bishoy St Anthony joined then by Brother Wissa who became later on Rev Fr Wissa, and has since then, attracted a number of Australian born and raised Monks who chose this holy and sanctified way of living; Rev Fr Shenouda, Rev Fr Theodore, Rev Fr Anthony, Fr Moses, Fr John, Late Fr Karas, Fr Mark and Fr Paul, Fr Seraphim and Fr Makarious.
What We Do Today
Over the years, St Shenouda Monastery has become a spiritual hub for Church camps, youth retreats, and family day visitations, welcoming visitors from across Australia and around the world. The Monastery is also actively involved with our neighbours in the Putty community, building relationships through mutual respect and quiet service. We warmly welcome all who are curious about the Orthodox Church and seek to experience its life of prayer and repentance.
Our Plans For The Future
As visitor numbers grow, especially during Feast Days and major events, we see a clear need for larger facilities to better serve our congregation. To meet this need, we plan to build a new church that can hold 500 people, along with a spacious services building including a dining hall, kitchen, bookshop, canteen, offices, and lounges. This project will support both our visitors and the monastic community, and has been blessed and approved by the late H.H. Pope Shenouda III.
Grow in your Orthodox Faith one Book at a Time
St Shenouda Press publishes Orthodox books that bring the wisdom of the Church Fathers and saints to today’s reader, which make indispensable resources for parents, priests, Sunday School servants, and seekers who want to learn more about the Orthodox faith.
Music Hub For Orthodox Christian Artists
Asaph Tunes is a service of St Shenouda Monastery, NSW, Australia, which aims to encourage young Christian Orthodox artists to write, compose and sing new songs using contemporary music. Asaph Tunes’ role is to encourage and present the work of these artists to the best quality and to provide it in the most common media available such as iTunes, SoundCloud and various other internet radio stations.

The Christmas Journey to Egypt
Did you know that Egypt plays a vital role in the life of Jesus? Shortly after His birth, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph fled to Egypt to escape King Herod’s threats to kill baby Jesus. This journey, known as the Flight to Egypt, fulfilled the Old Testament prophecy, “Out of Egypt I called My Son” (Hosea 11:1). Imagine a young Jesus walking the ancient streets of a land rich in history, a land where His presence began a legacy of faith.
St. Mark: The Evangelist in Egypt
Shortly after Jesus’ resurrection, one of His closest followers, St. Mark, brought the Gospel to Egypt. As the writer of one of the four Gospels, St. Mark’s connection to Jesus is profound—his home was where the Last Supper took place. Arriving in Alexandria, St. Mark introduced Christianity to Egypt, baptizing believers and establishing the Coptic Orthodox Church. His mission set Egypt on a path to becoming a beacon of Christianity.
Egypt as a Centre of Ancient Christianity
In the early centuries, Christianity had five major centres: Jerusalem, Antioch, Rome, Constantinople, and Alexandria. Alexandria, founded by St. Mark, became known for its deep theological scholarship, particularly through the famed School of Alexandria. This was a hub of Christian thought, blending faith with philosophy and producing some of the Church’s greatest leaders and thinkers.
Resilience Through Persecution
Christianity flourished in Egypt despite centuries of trials. Following the Muslim conquest in the 7th century, Christians faced waves of persecution. Yet, the Coptic Orthodox Church remained steadfast, preserving the faith with extraordinary courage.
A Faith Rooted in Apostolic Tradition
What makes the Coptic Orthodox Church unique? It has held firmly to the traditions passed down from the apostles, preserving the richness of early Christianity. The Church’s liturgical practices, hymns, and teachings have remained consistent over the centuries, rooted in the Bible and the witness of the saints.
The liturgy, for example, is a spiritual journey, inviting worshippers to experience the story of salvation. Its prayers and hymns echo the voices of early Christians, creating a timeless bridge between the past and the present.

In a world filled with questions and shifting values, the Orthodox Church provides something enduring: a connection to the original faith, unaltered and vibrant. It offers a space for spiritual growth through community, prayer, and deep engagement with Scripture.
